Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is keeping a cool head despite the hype around his blistering start to the season.

Gomez was man-of-the-match in the 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday. He has almost certainly cemented his place alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back in the absence of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

But the 21-year-old admitted he would be happy to slot in at right-back if necessary.

“All I can do is play. I don’t think it’s down to me to declare or say anything,” said Gomez.

“Obviously, in the past I have said I want to play there eventually but whether I’m doing well or not is not for me to decide.

“I’ve just got to stay focused and try to keep going. I’ve got great people around me like Virgil and the whole team to learn from and keep developing.”
